Taste - If you love chicken fried steak and meatless options such as Beyond or Impossible, this recipe will make you inspect the package because it tastes like real meat.
Oh, but if you have not eaten these crazy delicious meat substitutes, try one with this recipe to experience the full umami of them today! This recipe is a healthy version of a not so healthy meal, but with all the flavor you know and love.
Cost - Being a frugal minded individual myself, I have to mention this meat is a little higher in cost than beef. While incorporating this quality of food to the budget may seem impossible (pun intended), I promise it is not beyond reach! Buy in bulk when on sale or use manufacturers coupons (found online or in Sundays paper) to save money.
Healthy tips - Use non-GMO flour and corn starch if available. Grapeseed, avocado, or olive oil are healthy alternatives for frying food.
Although Beyond and Impossible meat is made from plant-based ingredients, they are processed foods. Sodium (salt), sugar, and other processed ingredients are added to these so enjoy in moderation. They are both Halal and Kosher certified, gluten-free, and made with zero tree or peanuts.
Ingredients:
12oz. package of Beyond or Impossible Meat
1/2 cup of Grapeseed oil
1 cup of all-purpose flour
2 tbsps. of corn starch
Fresh ground black pepper
1/2 tsp of cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp of Sea salt or pink Himalayan salt
2 eggs
1/2 tsp of Adobo or Zatarains Creole seasoning
Directions:
#1- Heat a large cast-iron skillet or frying pan on medium to high heat setting and add the grapeseed oil.
#2- In a regular cereal sized bowl add eggs and either, Adobo (a popular Latin seasoning) or Zatarains Creole seasoning and mix well.
#3- In a separate but larger bowl, add flour, corn starch, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt. Mix well.
#4- Open package of either Beyond or Impossible plant-based meat and divide into 4-5 pieces. Shape each piece into a patty and coat them in the flour. Ensure front, back, and sides of all the meat are covered in flour before the next step.
#5- Individually dip each flour covered patty into the egg mixture and thoroughly coat each side.
Moms Tip - Do not handle this roughly or it will break apart. No worries if it does break apart, I have your back! Easily fix it by pressing meat back into patty shape and re-dipping into flour mixture and then the egg mixture.
#6- Dip the patty (don't forget to cover all sides again) into the flour mixture one final time before slowly placing them into hot skillet.
#7- Fry until edges are golden brown and slowly turn patties over. Fry patties for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from skillet/pan and place on a plate lined with paper towels or napkins to absorb any excess oil.
#8- Top the golden yumminess with gravy and plate with your favorite sides, such as roasted vegetables and potatoes.
